With over a decade of experience in academia, including moderating academic debates and conferences, being a University Senator, and participating in many litigious departmental assemblies, I have developed a solid understanding of the importance and processes of moderation.

My Approach

Based on my experience, the two fundamental issues in most meetings involve time and fairness. The time issue is that many important topics must often be discussed at the same meeting, and some topics receive a disproportionate amount of time relative to other topics. Thus, the first Pillar of my approach is a strategic division of time across topics, and a fairly strict adherence to agreed-upon time for each topic and to individual interventions. The fairness issue is that whether we like it or not, some individuals receive more “air time” than others during meeting. While this is a natural occurrence, it can lead other participants to believe that they did not receive a fair or adequate opportunity to express their views. Thus, the second Pillar of my approach is a careful attention to fairness regarding all participants’ right to be heard during meetings.
